In the constant search for more power out of a factory sports car, there are a number of different avenues one can travel to determine the final goal. There are some enthusiasts who want to have the highest amount of horsepower to the wheels as possible, where as others want to have vehicles that maintain driveability and reliability without sacrificing throttle response from the lag of large turbochargers. The GReddy twin turbo kit for the 350Z meets these two mediums right in the middle. The twin 18G TD06 turbochargers supply the VQ35DE with enough boost to reach respectable wheel power numbers north of 350rwhp and also create an incredible thrusting force that sinks you deep in your seat under full throttle. Good luck trying to move forward in your seat when your foot is to the floor with this setup.
This twin turbo kit is coveted by many 350z owners. Ebert L. of Virginia is one of these owners. After Ebert made his final decision to have this twin turbo setup on his Z, he approached Z specialists, Altered Atmosphere Motorsports. Located just outside of Washington, D.C., Altered Atmosphere services, tunes, and builds Nissan 350Z and Infiniti G35 vehicles in the metro area, and as a result of this experience, Ebert felt confident to drop his Z off at their shop in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
The GReddy Kit arrived, complete with turbos, Tial wastegates, RCE 440cc Injectors, E-Manage Blue, a polished Front Mount Intercooler, and all blue silicon connectors. In addition to the basics that come with the kit when it is ordered from GReddy, Ebert opted for even more components to allow him to run more efficiently and produce more power. He decided to go with a AAM Spec Products including their Throttle Body Spacer, Oil Pan Spacer, Oil Return Line Kit, Competition 2.5 inch Catalytic Converters, and a custom tune using AAM’s ECU Flash. An HKS Super Sequential Blow Off Valve, and a Walboro 255lph Fuel Pump were also incorporated in the Twin Turbo build.
It took AAM’s master technician just hours to have the VQ35 engine removed and prepped for the turbo installation. Soon after the engine was separated from the car, the turbos, manifolds, and intercooler were mounted. AAM’s master technician also custom mounted Ebert’s HKS Evc in the center console, just under the climate controls. The throttle body spacer, oil pan spacer, and oil return line were soon to follow. Before any time at all, the engine was back in the car and the car was almost entirely finished. But the final touch had to be done on the dyno. After being tuned own their dyno by the owner of Altered Atmosphere, Mike Mahaffey, Ebert’s Z was ready to go.
Ebert couldn’t wait to get his car back into his hands. After just two days he was driving home with over 135 more horsepower that he had when he dropped the car off. It’s somewhat of long drive back to his home in Virginia from Gaithersburg, Maryland, and most of the road time is on the freeways of the Nation’s Capital. Altered Atmosphere told Ebert that they could not be held responsible for any speeding tickets that he might acquire on his way back home. Ebert agreed, but its very hard to resist temptation, when you know that the difference between 55mph and 125mph is just a matter of stepping on the throttle…
